Filling that Post Potter Void
by Kaity Hartburg
Call me a fool, but I’m pretty sure that every true Harry Potter fan felt a certain gaping hole of emptiness when they finished the seventh book. Of course there was the happy euphoria that comes from finishing any book, but finishing the beloved series had a bitter sweet ending for me. I was amazed that I had finished it, but I knew this was the end. There would be no huge surprises for me after that, rereading them is great but just isn’t the same. Of course, after I finished the final book, I reread the entire series again, but the spark of the unknown was just not there.
If you felt the same way that I did, then I am sure you (like myself) set out to find another series that would captivate you in the same way that Harry had. Not meaning any disrespect to Harry, nothing could ever take his place, but you might have felt that you needed something to ease the pain. It took me a long time to discover something that I could feel as lost in as I did inside the world of Hogwarts. After rereading the entire series three times, I decided that perhaps I needed to embark on a new literary journey. This new journey led to me the Percy Jackson series.
For those of you who have not read or heard of the Percy Jackson series, let me fill you in a bit. Percy Jackson is a normal boy with ADHD and dyslexia who has a rough time at school. His mom is married to an awful, horrible, rude man named Gabe that Percy, unfortunately, has to call his stepfather. Percy’s best friend Grover uses crutches to get around and is constantly made fun of at school. Percy’s Latin teacher pushes him extra hard in school, teaching him about Greek mythology. When Percy’s school takes a trip to the museum and his evil math teacher suddenly turns into a fury and tries to kill him, Percy knows something is not right. Suddenly Grover is a satyr (a boy’s head and torso but goats legs) and his Latin teacher is a centaur (a man’s head and torso but a horse’s body) and he is rushed off to Camp Half Blood. At camp, he learns that all the Greek myths he had ever heard of were true. He discovers that he is the child of a mortal woman and a god. Not just any god, but one of the Big Three: Poseidon. I won’t tell you anything more because I don’t want to ruin the series.
I just finished the entire Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. There are 5 books in all: The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titans Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian. Each one is full of wonderful plot twists, action, and mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end when you realize that nothing is as you thought it would be. The books are steeped in Greek Mythology so deeply that you will find yourself running to your computer to Google different gods and goddess’. I highly recommend this series! I only have one problem now: what do I do now that I finished this series? Well of course, I start a new one. I am currently reading The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. Yes, it is the same Nicholas Flamel! I promise to let you know how it is, once I am done!
I hope that this may have helped you try to fill your after Potter void. Know that nothing could ever take Harry’s place, but I’m sure JK Rowling would want us to continue to read more and more books! Enjoy whatever series comes your way and don’t be afraid to try out new books! Happy Reading to All!
