To Die or Revive
by Ann Marie
Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Happy New Year! Sparks are flying everywhere. Fire crackers bang and wiz through the air, weaving around thrown hats. The radio is turned up loud, and glasses of champagne continuously refills itself without a server in sight. Elves duck around corners sweeping up the falling confetti and dropped food. After hours of celebrating there might be some fallen dishes, but a quick flick of the wrist and a short “repairo” fixes everything.
Yes, it’s the start of a new year, and all around the world people celebrate in countless ways. No doubt the Leaky Cauldron and Three Broomsticks is busy supplying the wizarding world with pint after endless pint of butter beer and fire whiskey, and I bet George and the rest of Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes is busy trying to keep up with the number of firework orders. Other Brits may be toasting and enjoying their tea and cookies while we Americans are downing our disgusting black eyed peas for good luck. May Jay in Italy is eating grapes by the bushels in hopes that they’ll bring a good year. In China, they’re still planning their parties because the new year hasn’t hit them yet. Everywhere around the world muggles, witches, wizards, elves, goblins, and us wanna-bes who swing sticks in hopes that it’ll send that remote over two more inches are all saying good bye to 2009 and hello to the new decade. Ten years of Potter now behind us, and with the series over, and the movies wrapping up we need to find something else to keep the magic alive.
There’s always Wizard Rock. Listening to Alex, Mike, Jay, and or AJ is always fun. Live Ducks! Until someone decides to release the next episode I guess we will all have to listen to reruns and blast our Remus Lupins, Whomping Willows, and Moaning Myrtles cds until our parents tell us to shut up (in that loving way parents always do, you know). And for those of you who are able to go see the brand new Harry Potter theme park in Florida (those of you like me!) this summer is going to be amazing! But what about the rest of the year?
Make this one of your New Year’s Resolutions- one that you promise on a stack of Harry Potter books not to break: You will add more HP in your life this year. Put a quote as your facebook status each day, read the entire series without stopping, maybe challenge your friends to read the entire series first and then quiz them to make sure they remember every little detail. Wouldn’t it be so fun to follow around a wrock band for the summer? Maybe you could start your own! If you do, please send me your band name and some lyrics or the song or something! Maybe you could start a Harry Potter Poetry book or something. Fanfiction is still alive and well! Spread those WWAPWBD (wow, can’t believe I remembered all that!) bracelets.
The point is, just because the Harry Potter decade is over, you don’t have to let it be! There’s so many ways we can keep Harry and the gang in our lives, so let’s all make a comeback. I’d love to hear some ideas about how you or someone you know is going to spread Harry’s message of Love or Hate throughout your community. Or if you want to yell “Slytherin Pride” everyday…well those slimy snakes do complete the four parts of Hogwarts.
