You Know You're a HP Fan When You Classify Your Boyfriend
by Kaity

You have probably seen a list that says something along the lines of, “You know you’re a true Harry Potter fan when…” Accio even has one of those lists. A lot of times on a list like this, there is something that says “You know you’re a true Harry Potter fan when you classify each person in a room as a Harry Potter character or put them into a Hogwarts House.” I am one of the many individuals afflicted with this habit. In my mind, each one of my friends or classmates is a Harry Potter character. I know quite a few Malfoy’s, a couple of Hermione’s, and one or two Luna’s. Sometimes it is difficult to match a person up with a character and I find myself settling to place them into a Hogwarts house. Of the four (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw) Gryffindor and Ravenclaw would be my favorites. I would have to say that most of my friends would be in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff and I would like to think of myself as either Ravenclaw or Gryffindor, but I’m not sure if I’m really quite that smart or brave. A house for people with a good sense of humor and who like to have fun is more of my cup of tea.

The other day in my Senior English class, a comment was made that caused every head to turn and say, “Did I just hear that right?” The comment was: “I only said that to try and sound smart.” This baffled me and the first thought that jumped into my mind was, “This guy is definitely a Viktor Krum.” He is tall, always looks like he is brooding or in pain, very athletic, but a little lacking in the intelligent speech department. After this moment of happy discovery, I uncovered the great joy of seeing people as characters. Unfortunately, this is not something I can share with others because the moment you say, “I refuse to talk to you because you are a Slytherin.” People tend to look at you funny and become very frightened.

The biggest challenge came from attempting to classify my boyfriend as a character. He did not fit any classification of a character! I see myself as a Hermione, Ginny, or Luna. So, naturally, I would want him to be either Ron or Harry. But he isn’t anyone’s sidekick and could not stand to be one so that takes Ron out of the picture. But he also isn’t into action, adventure, or great mysteries. If only there was a character that liked video games, Wendy’s and Dungeons and Dragons then I would have the perfect match! I finally decided that I would not classify him as a character but perhaps a house. This caused a similar problem. He could fit in each one! He is strong and brave like Gryffindor, very smart and witty like Ravenclaw, cunning and ambitious like Slytherin, and loyal and hard working like Hufflepuff. Then I realized something. It is fun when one is bored to sit around and classify everyone into a character or house, but this just isn’t feasible to life. People can’t be classified! There are many sides to each person and I don’t think JK Rowling would want anyone to try to be just like one of her characters. To achieve some of their greater characteristics sure, but not to actually try to be them. I love my boyfriend for who he is, each little thing that makes him his wonderful, individualistic self. He is wonderful person with an amazing heart, soul, and mind. I love him because he uniquely different and loves me more than anyone could ever know, not because he fits into a fantasy world that I so enjoy. Harry Potter is huge part of my life, but it is not my entire life. I do not live at Hogwarts and although at times I may wish I did, sometimes it is an uplifting experience to recognize that the real world can be just as, if not infinitely more, magical! Happy reading to all!
